“Something wicked is coming,” the burger chain announced on Twitter, with a brief promo video featuring thunder and lightning and a lunar eclipse, with a burger standing in for the moon. But it’s not just the color of the hamburger bun that makes it unique, insists Burger King. It’s the flavor.
Burger King says A-1 Sauce is baked right in the bun, and that’s what gives the bun its black color. But they insist you will go “Mmmmmm” once you sink your fangs into its juicy body. And in all fairness, people who have eaten the Halloween Whopper say the bun looks pretty close to the advertised burger.
But after the burger had been digested and made its way through the gastrointestinal system, something seemed to happen, causing a little concern for those who keep track of the color of their, let’s call it excrement. Their poop is coming out bright green.
Washington Post investigation
The Washington Post reached out to Burger King, looking for an explanation into the allegations by many consumers that after eating the burger, their poop had turned green. While awaiting a call back from the company, the newspaper decided to rely on a bit of wild speculation on their part.
The Washington Post says it is simple, it’s green or blue dye in the bun. Remember when the black-bunned Whopper came out in Japan? The company uses bamboo charcoal for both flavoring and color. But in the U.S., the company used A-1 Sauce for flavor because, after all, that’s as American as can be.
But, says the newspaper, the sauce is not responsible for the black color. They say it took a lot of tweaking to get the right color, and that definitely involved using a dye. They suggest it may be purple or blue food coloring because those colors have been known to cause green stools.
If you don’t believe this, drink a whole lot of grape Koolaid, and see for yourself. This writer has to go with the food coloring theory, at least until we know for sure. But has anyone else had this particular problem after eating a Halloween Whopper?
