General Mills pulls Betty Crocker cake mixes in U.S. and Canada

This recall, issued Monday afternoon, applies to Betty Crocker cake mixes sold in the U.S. and in Canada. It is just the latest in a growing list of secondary recalls linked to an ongoing 21-state E. coli O121 outbreak that has sickened 42 people since December 2015.

General Mills owns the Betty Crocker brand and dozens of other brands of consumer products. General Mills distributed the recalled flour nationwide to retailers, restaurants and bulk buyers, including other food producers. General Mills flour has also been recalled in China.

In a news release, General Mills said one of its suppliers recently notified the company that it had used Wondra flour implicated in the July 1, 2016, recall to produce flavor bits it sent back to General Mills for certain Betty Crocker cake mixes.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
