Salmonella fears prompt recall of Barber chicken products

The expanded recall, announced July 12, 2015, includes an additional 1,707,494 pounds of raw, stuffed, frozen chicken products that may be contaminated with Salmonella enteritidis. Additional illnesses have also been reported.

CBS News is reporting the USDA’s FSIS says at least six people in Minnesota and Wisconsin became sick between April and late June this year. The first recall was announced on July 2, and reported in Digital Journal. At that time, Barber Foods recalled 58,320 pounds of frozen, raw, stuffed chicken breasts labeled as Chicken Kiev.

The expanded recall now includes the following varieties of Barber’s raw, stuffed, frozen chicken packaged in six individual pouches per box: Chicken Kiev, Chicken Cordon Bleu, Chicken Tenders and Chicken Broccoli Cheese. The products were manufactured between February 17 and May 20, 2015 and were sold at supermarkets across the U.S. and Canada.

The recalled packages have a Use/By date of April 28, 2016, May 20, 2016, or July 21, 2016. Lot Code numbers include: 0950292102, 0950512101, or 0951132202.

A big concern with FSIS and Barber Foods is that these products may be in some consumers’ home freezers. People are asked to please check to see if any of these products are in their freezers and if discovered, to throw them out or return them to the store where purchased.

It is also important to remember that raw chicken must be cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit in order to kill the Salmonella bacterium. The USDA/FSIS recommends the following when handling any raw chicken products:
Hands and any surfaces, including surfaces that may have breading dislodged from the products, should be cleaned after contact with these raw products. Also, keep raw poultry away from other food that will not be cooked. Use one cutting board for raw poultry and a separate one for fresh produce and cooked foods.
