article imageArmani favourite restaurant burns on Hvar: Open again in 24 hours

By Paul Bradbury     Oct 4, 2014 in Food
Hvar - A freak fire on one of Croatia's most exclusive waterfronts destroys the terrace of one of Giorgio Armani's favourite restaurants. But not for long.
Luxury restaurants are often defined by service, food and location, but the impressive response to a devastating fire at Restaurant Gariful on Hvar on October 4, 2014, added a new dimension, as the exclusive waterfront restaurant recovered from the destruction of 90% of its terrace, to reopen to a full house less than 24 hours later.

Gariful is no ordinary restaurant. With the most extensive wine list on the Adriatic and guests who have included Bill Gates, Roman Abramovich, Prince Harry and Giorgio Armani (who named Gariful in his top 7 restaurants in the world earlier this year), the restaurants prides itself on its fresh seafood and service which, coupled with its stunning location on the Hvar waterfront often dubbed 'the new St Tropez', has ensured the restaurant is one of Croatia's most successful eateries.

The fire started at 18:30 last night when one of the gas heaters used to provide heating for the guests caught fire with a canopy. There were fortunately no guests at the restaurant at the time, as owner Ivan Gospodnetic explained to Digital Journal:
"We had reservations for more than 50 people later in the evening. The fire came from nowhere and quickly engulfed the terrace. I must pay a huge tribute to the responsiveness of the Hvar Fire Service, who were on the scene in just a couple of minutes, quickly containing and extinguishing the fire. Most of the terrace was destroyed, but the most important thing is that nobody was hurt."

The final touches are applied to a speedy renovation job, in time to meet the considerable evening bookings.

Although peak season is over on the Croatian coast, Gariful is exceptionally busy at the moment, with two major events taking place, including hosting a part of the first Hvar Big Game Fishing Cup, which started two days ago. With media and the fishing boats due in by 17:00, the race was on to clean up the mess, as well as preparing the terrace for another evening of bookings.
The staff worked through the night to ensure that all was restored almost as it had been before, and this evening's tables were full of diners, many of whom were completely unaware of the drama of the previous evening.
