Anchovy-stuffed olives from Spain recalled in U.S., Canada

The recall includes 3-ounce cans of olives distributed in the United States and Canada. The products were distributed nationwide in the U.S. and Canada to food distributors, food service customers, grocery chains, and other retail locations for further distribution or use, according to Roland Foods.

The recall was initiated after consumers filed complaints of “bulging” cans of the product, spurring an investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA has not revealed specifically what was found in the testing of the olives.

“After receiving consumer complaints of bulging cans, the FDA conducted sampling and analysis which revealed non-pathogenic microorganisms. This information was shared with the firm and they decided to conduct a recall and crafted the language,” an FDA spokesman said, according to Food Safety News.

The following product is subject to the recall:
Product: Roland® Manzanilla Olives Stuffed with Anchovies

The UPC number on the cartons is 10041224714028. The lot and item numbers on the cartons are the same as on the individual cans. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) recall warning also lists the same product information.

While no illnesses have been reported with this recall, consumers are being advised to not eat the products. Either throw them away or return the product to the place of purchase. If anyone thinks they may have become ill after consuming the recalled product, they are advised to consult a healthcare provider, according to the FDA recall notice.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our dear friend Karen Graham, who served as Editor-at-Large at Digital Journal. She was 78 years old. Karen's view of what is happening in our world was colored by her love of history and how the past influences events taking place today. Her belief in humankind's part in the care of the planet and our environment has led her to focus on the need for action in dealing with climate change. It was said by Geoffrey C. Ward, "Journalism is merely history's first draft." Everyone who writes about what is happening today is indeed, writing a small part of our history.
