Boy wearing diaper found driving Power Wheels on busy highway

The incident took place around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. The toddler was spotted driving his Power Wheels down the median of Highway 19 in Crystal River, Florida.

Power Wheels are toys manufactured by Fisher-Price. These toy cars and trucks are battery-operated, allowing children to drive them and are designed for children from 12 months to seven years. These toys have realistic features such as FM radios, power lock brakes and can travel forward and in reverse.

Drivers noticed the three-year-old driving down in the median of US 19, a busy highway that runs through Crystal River. Several Good Samaritans driving on the highway stopped their vehicles and surrounded the tot to protect him from other traffic. The temperature at the time was 52 degrees F and one of the people who stopped put a blanket around the toddler to keep him warm.

One of the motorists who stopped was Danny Collins who took pictures of what was happening. Collins said, “I was shocked. That’s why I took the pictures. I was like nobody’s going to believe. Could have ended a lot differently if not for the people who stopped.”

The boy’s father turned up about 10 minutes after the boy was found on the highway. According to the father, he was in the washroom when the boy stood on a small chair and unlocked the front door. As soon as he realized his son was not in the house, he hopped on his bicycle and went looking for him.

Lindsay Blair, a spokesperson for the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, told ABC News the boy’s home is two blocks or about 500 yards away from the highway. The toddler cut through neighbours’ yards to reach his destination.

Deputies did not charge the father but referred the matter to the Florida Department of Families and Children for an investigation. Pending that investigation, the name of the father is not being released.
