Vitter is the ranking member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. He also sits on its Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure. Not only that, but Vitter represent the same district in Louisiana where Elio Motors has a plant.
Elio Motors is the creator of a three-wheeled concept car. Paul Elio, the principal owner, said that drivers will be able to get around while getting 84 mpg. Elio said that he thinks the world is ready for a vehicle that doesn’t cost much, has high mileage and is ideal for commuting and city driving.
Vitter’s proposed legislation would create temporary safety standards for the vehicles, while federal auto safety officials work on creating permanent rules.
Without the rules, the vehicles will be subjected to the regulations that more than 20 states have enacted, or will eventually be enacting, or the vehicles will need to meet the federal rules for motorcycles.
Vitter said that creating the recognition for autocycles would create jobs, while ensuring their safety. He continued to say that the same entrepreneurial spirit that created motorcycles and motor vehicles would be encouraged.
