Tokyo - More Honda Mazda and Nissan vehicles have been added to a major global airbag recall affecting over 10 million vehicles.
Honda, Mazda and Nissan are collectively recalling an additional 3 million vehicles due to defective airbags manufactured by supplier Takata — the number two global supplier of automotive safety components.
Other companies affected by the recall include Toyota, BMW, Chrysler and Ford, according to a Reuters report.
Takata urged the latest recall when it became apparent earlier recalls had not addressed all problem vehicles. The company says the problem revolves around improper storage of the airbag propellant, leading to moisture contamination, at North American plants. The defect could cause the inflators to explode and spray metal debris into the cabin.
In effect, the inflation of an airbag is caused by a controlled explosion.
So far, two deaths have been attributed to the airbag defect. Both were recorded in Honda models in the U.S., and the company says it is aware of 41 other instances attributable to the defect.
Honda seems to be the worst affected, with a reported 2.03 million vehicles being recalled (including over a million in North America) in the latest round. The vehicles were built between 2000 and 2005.
Honda had recalled a million vehicles in 2013 to address an airbag problem related to Takata-manufactured airbags.
Nissan is recalling 755,000 vehicles (of 2001 through 2003 model years) globally, including 228,000 in North America, to fix the problem. Affected Mazda vehicles (manufactured from 2002 through 2004) number 160,000, with some 15,000 in North America. Both companies also recalled vehicles in 2013 to address airbag problems.
The latest action brings the total number of recalled vehicles to about 10.5 million and also includes Toyota vehicles recalled earlier in 2014. It may also expand to include some Chrysler models, according to another statement from the U.S. National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The list of vehicles recalled includes the Honda CR-V and Fit, Mazda6 and RX-8, Nissan Pathfinder and Infiniti FX35, Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Camry and Corolla (among dozens of others), and may grow to include non-Japanese models like the Dodge Charger.
