article imageNight of glitterati: A preview of the 2014 ACM awards

The Academy of Country Music (ACM) awards started in 1966 and have since done much to recognize the accomplishments of some of the most eminent names and new talents in the genre.
These are the only awards in North America that exclusively recognize country music. The first version of the show was televised in the 1972 on ABC and they are now a regular fixture on CBS’ annual calendar. This year will be no different as the channel will air the 49th ACM awards in April.
Like always, we are promised a star studded night with a pompous display of some of the most popular names in music. However, the ACM trophy or the coveted “hat”, is what steals the limelight on every occasion.
The 49th Annual ACM Awards will be hosted at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 6th and will be broadcasted live by CBS. The famous duo of Blake Shelton (four time ACM winner) and Luke Bryan (past Entertainer of the Year) will come together to co-host the event. Shelton co-hosted with Reba McEntire last year.
Although these awards are all about giving the best what they deserve – reward and recognition, there are also some who will be returning to add to the ACM awards they’ve already received. Luke Bryan has rightfully claimed the Entertainer of the Year award at the last ACMs and during the 49th awards, he has made nominee once again in the category, alongside names like Taylor Swift.
Another category to watch out for includes male and female vocalist of the year with renowned names Lee Brice, Keith Urban, Sheryl Crowe, and Carrie Underwood among the nominees.
However, one of the most popular categories for fans is undoubtedly Single Record of the Year which will be decided between: Florida Georgia Line (Cruise), Tim McGraw (Highway Don’t Care), Lee Brice (I Drive Your Truck), Miranda Lambert (Mama’s Broken Heart), and Darius Rucker (Wagon Wheel). Last year’s winner was Miranda Lambert with “Over You,” so will the star repeat?
ACM Awards can be called anything but a platform for one hit wonders. If they recognize hit singles, there is also a separate award for the hit albums of the year. And there are rich pickings this year with nominations for: True Story by Shelton Blake, Crash My Party by Luke Bryan, Here’s to the Good Times by Florida Georgia Line, Two Lanes of Freedom by Tim McGraw and Same Trailer Different Park by Kacey Musgraves.
These will feature prominently during the televised portion of the awards, but, there are also a number of “off camera” awards which recognize things like Venue of the Year, Casino of the Year, as well as various radio awards.
Country fans across the country wait all year for this night to celebrate, discuss, and sometimes dispute the award winners, and there will be plenty to talk about after this event.
The ACM awards will be shown live from Las Vegas by CBS TV and for all those fans who miss the stars shining down, they’ll be able to read all about them the next day on their favorite blogs or catch the ACM re-telecast.
