The immensely popular content management system WordPress has entered the second release candidate stage for version 3.9.
The official WordPress blog says that almost 60 changes have been made between the first release candidate and the second one; a full change log is visible on the development blog. The newest features and fixes, however, are improved TinyMCE compatibility, fixes to live widget previews and a new theme browser enabling users to see at a glance all of their installed themes for the platform. These can grow to large numbers if users regularly try out new themes as there are literally thousands of freely available themes covering a huge range of genres from generic themes to more specialised ones such as photography, music, technology, video, news, portfolio and law themes made officially by the WordPress team and by third-parties that are suitable for use on a variety of professional websites.
WordPress powers tens of thousands of websites and blogs across the internet and is famed for its ease of use and yet immensely powerful feature set as well as its one-step installer enabling it to be setup on new sites with minimal effort. This has allowed it to become an effective way of creating and maintaining a simple website if you are a more novice computer user or for creating a professional-styled blog with many advanced web features including the thousands of plugins available for the platform and raw HTML5 and JavaScript code. Its almost universal support by web and domain hosts has led to hundreds of thousands of users creating sites with it and its one-step installer mentioned above means that hobbyists and techies can run it off their own web servers with ease. It is, however, by no means a dead project and is still under constant development with many new features planned as today's progress shows with the second release candidate for WordPress 3.9 bringing a host of bug fixes and UI improvements.
The best way to get started testing WordPress 3.9 Release Candidate 2 now is to download the release candidate in ZIP format or use the WordPress Beta Tester plugin as recommended on the WordPress blog. It is worth noting that this is still a beta build and as such probably shouldn't be used on live sites where reliability is of paramount importance. The WordPress team is also asking that people check that their homemade plugins are fully compatible with WordPress 3.9 using this release and then mark them to say that they are 3.9-safe.
