They were able to reproduce the techno sound effects of the familiar theme song so perfectly that fans of the brutal fighting game worldwide have been flocking to YouTube to witness the novelty of the song they already know by heart being done without instruments.
The performance of the five members of The Warp Zone, dressed in Mortal Kombat ninja costumes, each individual spotting a different color, is impressive as well as amusing.
The video screen is divided into six panels, showing each member of the group — except for the top center panel where a footage from the game plays.
Each member recreates a part of the song and harmonizes with the others to reproduce the entire song. One of the group even reproduces the weird voiceover, introduces the characters and completes the performance with the brutal game’s chilling “finish him” death call.
The video, posted to YouTube on April 22, has since gone viral with more than 1 million views.
This is not the first time that the quintet have created an a cappella version of a popular theme song. The Warp Zone run a YouTube channel where they post videos of their sketch comedies and a cappella covers of popular theme songs.
They created an a cappella version of the theme song of the X-Men: The Animated Series.
They produced a capella versions of the theme songs of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, the Powerpuff Girls, Darkwing Duck, Game of Thrones and Captain Planet.
Mortal Kombat is one of the most popular fighting video game franchises developed in 1992 by Midway Games’ Chicago studio. Mortal Kombat X, developed by NetherRealm Studios, is the tenth in the Mortal Kombat video game series. It was released on April 14, 2015 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
According to Digital Journal’s in-house gaming guru, Can Tran,
“The story behind Mortal Kombat X takes place right after Mortal Kombat 9, where Earthrealm and Outworld suffer heavy losses against the new war against the Netherrealm. Quan Chi and Shinnok, the chief architect of everything, found the prime opportunity to attack when both realms are trying to rebuild after the destruction by Shao Kahn’s forces.”
