article image'Santa B' pays off $50,000 in layaway bills at Penn. Wal-Mart

A mysterious person known only as "Santa B" paid off $50,000 in layaway bills for a variety of customers at a Silver Springs Commons, Pennsylvania, Wal-Mart Monday morning.
Tanisha Burton of Harrisburg discovered she was one of 100 customers who had their bills paid off by the unknown donor, according to The Internet is also full of other stories of donors who have paid off layaway bills in various places during this Christmas season.
"It was definitely a surprise, and a blessing," Burton explained. She still owed $200 left to pay on layaway for toys purchased for her daughter.
Steve Myers, store manager said he calls people such as "Santa B," "layaway angels. He added anonymous donors have given monetary gifts before to pay off layaway purchases for others of $2,000-$3,000 before. Myers added, however, nobody has ever given a gift this large.
Myers said Santa B is a local man who did want to give his name.
"He said he wanted to help take care of folks – to bring everyone a special Christmas," Myers recalled.
"I'm overwhelmed, and I guess relieved," said Robert Carolus of Mifflin County who came to get the toys for his grandchildren that he had put on layaway. "I'm just disappointed I couldn't say thank you."
In Birmingham, Alabama, police have paid off a number of layaway bills at a Wal-Mart. Some of the people whose bills had been paid off found they also won $50 gift cards as a result, according to
Shaundrica Nunn and Alesia Young were two people who found their bills had been paid and that they had won the gift cards.
"I'm so happy. I can't believe this,'' Nunn, mother of two daughters rejoiced at the news the Birmingham Police Department Special Response Team K-9 Unit had paid her bill. "It's a blessing. God is good, that's all I can say."
Sgt. Heath Boackle and Officer Metz Davis said they got the idea after learning NFL Quarterback Tim Tebow had once paid off a $700 layaway bill for others.
Such gifts seem to happen every year. Last year ABC reported a man in Central Florida used $21,000 of his own money to pay off layaway bills for 75 people.
