article imagePhoto of loyal dog standing guard over fallen friend goes viral

By Greta McClain     Jul 27, 2014 in Internet
Atlanta - They say a picture is worth a thousand words, which may explain why the image of a dog lovingly standing guard over his companion has touched so many heartstrings and made the picture the latest viral image on the Internet.
Atlanta resident Michael Mason was driving home last week when he saw a Pit Bull Terrier standing over another dog who had been struck by a car. The look on the dog's face as he stood by his companion, protecting her and trying to comfort her touched Mason. He told WSB-TV
“The look on his face. ‘Can someone help me?’ He was watching over him like a guard dog.”
Mason knew he had to do something and immediately turned around and went back to the dogs. He took a photo of the dogs and shared it with a friend, hoping he could find someone to help the animals. The photo was posted on Facebook and began to spread from one page to another. It caught the attention of Walking Dead actress Kylie Szymanski, who shared it on her Facebook page. The photo began to spread across the Internet, receiving more than 1,600 shares.
Mason never imagined the photo would garner so much attention, saying:
“I never thought it would happen to me (going viral). I wasn't thinking about it. I was thinking about the dog.”
Sadly, the dog struck by the car did not survive her injuries. Her protector, now known as Herman, hopes he is destined for a better fate. Herman is now in the care of Fulton County Animal Services, who is working closely with LifeLine Animal Project to find Herman a new home. Cicley Gay, a spokeswoman with LifeLine, told WSB Radio:
"We are grateful someone stopped and cared enough to take a picture and share it to demonstrate the power of a dog's love. And this sweet animal didn't leave his friend when she was injured."
Animal Services have received hundreds of calls from people interested in adopting Herman, however he is still waiting to find his new best friend. If you are interested in adopting Herman, contact Fulton County Animal Services.
