Tear-jerking organ donation ad, ‘The man and the dog,’ goes viral

The 90-second video dramatizes how strong the bond between a man and his dog could grow.

According to Little Black Book (LBB) Online, the ad was created for FATH, Fundación Argentina de Transplante Hepático (Argentina Foundation for Liver Transplants) by Los Angeles-based award-winning director Rodrigo Garcia Saiz, in collaboration with DDB Argentina.

DDB is the agency behind the 2014 John Lewis “Monty the Penguin” Christmas advert (see ad below), which received more than 23 million views on YouTube alone.

“The man and the dog” shows a day in the life of an elderly man whose dog never leaves his side and follows him everywhere he goes. The dog is by the man’s side when he wakes up in the morning. The dog waits patiently outside a cafe while the man enjoys coffee with friends at a café.

He visits a shop to buy some bread rolls and gives his beloved dog a treat, patting him in the head with a laugh.

The man is shown sitting on his sofa watching TV later in the evening. But he feels sudden discomfort, falls ill and is rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. His loyal dog chases the ambulance to the hospital and tries to enter the hospital to be with his owner, but the hospital staff shut him out.

After the man is taken into the hospital, the dog is utterly devastated about being separated from his master. He waits for his master outside the hospital building for days and refuses to leave even when it rains.

But unknown to the dog his master had died and his organ harvested for transplant.

After some days the hospital doors open and a woman on a wheelchair is shown leaving the hospital.

Although the ad does not state it, we are left to infer that the girl’s life had been saved by receiving an organ from the dog’s dead master. And the dog can sense the presence of his master in the girl despite the fact that the girl was only carrying the old master’s organ inside her.

The dog runs happily to the girl.

The girl is unaware of the reason why the dog is delighted to see her but she smiles at the excited dog.

Then a message appears, “Become an organ donor.”

Many viewers admit that they found the advert deeply touching.

It is believed the story was inspired by the famous case of Hachiko, the Japanese dog who went to a train station every afternoon for many years to wait for his dead master.

About 28,000 Americans undergo organ transplant surgery every year. According to the Daily Mail, more than 4,600 organ transplants, using organs donated by more than 2,400 donors, were carried out in the U.K. between April 2013 and March 2014. Of the total, about 200 were heart transplants.
