One of 3 silver microscopes, such as the instrument on the table here, built by Dutch microbiologist Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, was sold at Christies of London for a record amount of 312,000 Pounds. Van Leeuwenhoek discovered the first microscopic creatures with his hand-made lenses, which magnified 200 times.
