Mushroom Design, a nutraceutical company with a penchant for sustainability, has launched its first product through a direct-to-consumer subscription model. The product, Multimmunity, is a daily multivitamin with 9 vitamins and 9 medicinal mushrooms in a patent-pending bioavailable form.
With years of experience in the pharmaceutical and wellness space, Mushroom Design’s cofounders recognized it was time to change the dosage and delivery methods of mushrooms after R&D at Weizmann Institute of Science determined that excessive medicinal mushroom consumption could negatively impact standard health markers.*
“I didn’t know it was possible to overdo the immunity,” says cofounder Ashley Southard, “and I despised having to take multiple capsules and vitamins daily to ensure I was meeting my health needs – the costs add up, as do the bottles that, realistically, don’t always get recycled depending on your locale’s sorting.”
Recognizing the wastefulness in consuming multiple vitamins per day, Mushroom Design sought to combine NIH-dosed essential vitamins and mushrooms in one serving – meaning less capsules to consume, and less environmental waste in packaging.
Because mushrooms contain both water-soluble and oil-soluble components, the beaded delivery mechanism allows the nutritional content to remain in the state that the body absorbs best (the beads are water soluble; the oil in the capsule is oil soluble). Such division is patent-pending for its bioavailability and efficacy. The beads’ natural blue coloring is obtained from cabbage that serves as UV protectant for the ingredients within the beads that are sensitive to light.
Both founders Ashley and Jonathan believe the onus of environmental responsibility should be placed on the companies selling goods rather than the consumers. Mushroom Design ensures a carbon-neutral product cycle: consumers’ first purchase contains a reusable-for-life glass bottle shipped in 100% recycled cardboard box printed with carbon-negative algae ink. The protective shipping foam is made solely of non-GMO cornstarch that biodegrades within seconds.
