Live entertainers impacted by COVID-19 find support in new web series about mental health

Washington, DC – September 17, 2020 – Concerts are cancelled. Theatres are shuttered. Comedy clubs are closed. For the 12 million live performers and their supporting crew, whose careers it is to entertain audiences, COVID-19 has severely impacted their livelihoods, career trajectory and personal lives. Adding to the disruption is the fact no one knows when social distancing and the pandemic will be over. While the economic consequences have been difficult to deal with, the emotional impact and stress of the situation are taking a significant toll on entertainment industry professionals.

Seeing her colleagues facing major challenges and not having a proper outlet for their grief, anxiety and emotions, Noelle Jordan, a lighting, backline, video and production management professional, wanted to create a safe place for those in the entertainment industry to come together virtually and speak in an open and honest manner about what they are feeling. ‘What’s Up Roadie, How You Doing?’ (WURHYD) Is a weekly discussion series hosted by entertainment industry professionals and mental health care advocates. The series offers unique discussions about life off the road and the challenges that come with that change.

“Unless you’re in the entertainment industry you don’t really get it,” explains Jordan, “While many people are staying close to home and are avoiding pubic gatherings, entertainers have had nearly every aspect of their lives disrupted. Their career has come to a complete stop. While online performances can help to stay connected to fans, they are almost impossible to monetize. At this point, there is no indication about when performers and their support crews will get back to doing when they love. The financial stress alone is causing many to have relationship breakdowns. The discussion series is a safe space where they can listen, participate and see that they are not alone in their emotions and their struggles. More than just listening and discussing, the series will get into the things they can do to help their emotional wellbeing.”

‘What’s Up Roadie, How You Doing?’ Is an easy to follow, live, weekly video web series which features interviews with entertainers, industry professionals and mental health care professionals.
