Feared by some and respected by others, law enforcement officers and first responders are often undervalued. Their day-to-day job — filled with distressing scenes of violence, abuse, and desperation — eventually takes a toll on their physical and mental wellbeing. Steve Eastin’s new book, Backup after the Beat, available on Amazon, is written to support all the men and women in this line of duty and to give readers who harbor any resentment towards these professions a more positive perception.

“I had the honor of working with all types of people. It did not matter to me what race, color, national origin, gender, religion, beliefs, or what a person’s age was. I did not care! All that I knew was that God chose this profession for me and that I swore an oath that I would serve and protect all people,” says Eastin.

Drawing from over eighteen years of experience working as a police officer, Eastin recounts the ins and outs of a career in the police force. Filled with personal stories, Eastin shows the readers an unfiltered look into the realities of working in law enforcement. He outlines the team’s camaraderie but, more importantly, he focuses on the daily traumas that proceeded the onset of his PTSD.

Eastin comes out from behind the stereotypical police officers’ façade of always being strong and in control of their own lives to reveal intimate details of his breakdown and PTSD triggers. By openly talking about his condition, he gives a candid overview of his coping strategies to live a healthy and happy life.

When speaking about the fear or denial of asking for help, Eastin says: “I have experienced suicide not only on a professional level but in my personal life, from wanting and taking a substantial step to end my own life to bear witness to several suicides within my own family. I know that suicide is a dark and lonely place to be in. If you have suicidal thoughts, please call anyone and reach out to them, it’s okay, trust me, they will understand and be more than happy to help.”

Backup after the Beat also contains powerful inserts from Eastin’s wife, children, colleagues, and counselor to give an all-round view of what it means to live with a Law Enforcement officer and how PTSD affects the whole family.

Backup after the Beat by Steve Eastin is now available on Amazon.
