Dr. Mark Hochberg is focusing his COVID-19 relief efforts on providing in-depth training and pandemic response education to New York medical students. Mark Hochberg MD is a part of the COVID-19 team responsible for providing urgent care to thousands of critically ill patients and their families.
“Medical student understanding of COVID-19 diagnosis and treatment is crucial,” says Dr. Mark Hochberg. “During their medical careers, medical students will experience additional pandemics which will no doubt occur. The principles of coronavirus awareness, social distancing, personal protection equipment (PPE), mitigation of symptoms and search for a vaccine are the bedrocks of our teaching the next generation of doctors.”
Dr. Hochberg’s focus has been in training medical students for over a decade, with the belief that proper training for students will lead to a better future in the medical industry. In addition to training medical students, Mark Hochberg MD has been on handling the flood of COVID-19 patients in New York. Since the novel coronavirus outbreak (the novel coronavirus is the virus that causes COVID-19), Mark Hochberg MD has treated COVID-19 patients including patients transferred from other overwhelmed NY city hospitals.
With the volume of patients threatening to overwhelm New York hospital’s considerable facilities – Dr. Hochberg and the response teams have set forth streamlining processes, organizing PPE distribution, and retrofitting additional resources to handle overflow patients.
In addition to treating patients, the New York hospital has focused heavily on keeping health care staff as safe as possible, too. For this reason, New York nurses created their own creative workarounds to boost their safety. For instance, they were able to rig medication pumps and intravenous lines in a manner that prevented them from having to always enter patients’ rooms to adjust their medications. Staff also follow a special protocol for taking swabs of patients who are suspected to have the coronavirus. According to Dr. Mark Hochberg, this is well in line with the hospital’s previous experiences with dealing with health crises impacting the public.

Dr. Mark Hochberg is a board-certified thoracic surgeon. He has been Professor of Surgery at New York University School of Medicine and attending surgeon at NYU Medical Center and Bellevue Hospital since 2005. Dr. Hochberg has prioritized physician training just prior to and during the pandemic, though the urgency of the COVID-19 outbreak has led him to take a proactive care role.
