Here Is What Should Be Done to Safely Reopen Businesses Following COVID-19

BONITA SPRINGS, Florida – The country is slowly starting to reopen, with many states entering into Stage 1 for Opening Up American Again which includes many restaurants, salons, libraries, and other businesses opening their doors again to the public. However, as restrictions are being carefully removed, businesses and their employees are facing increasing fears of how to once again integrate back into the workplace in a safe, cautious, and methodical manner. Many employers are working diligently to alleviate the fears that their employees and/or Customers may have by instilling proper guidelines and preventative measures within this workplace to stop the transmission risks of COVID-19 in this indoor environment by following the necessary requirements outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has become a highly infectious disease, now classified as a pandemic, that started back in December 2019 in what members from John Hopkins Medicine believe to be Wuhan, China. This highly transmittable respiratory disease has several pathways of transmission including through droplets released into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes, as well as inhabitance on surfaces where the aerosolized droplets eventually settle in the contaminated environment. Now, as businesses around the Country begin to open their doors, there are several steps that need to be taken to reduce potential transmission risks among employees in an effort to prevent a COVID-19 outbreak in the workplace – including properly cleaning and disinfecting the workplace, increasing air filtration throughout the indoor environment, strategically redesigning office layouts with proper social distancing, and lastly educating employees on how to reduce transmission threats in the office.

“The broad stroke is that the open office is over, [but] there’s a bunch of different things that that means,” says Amol Sarva, the CEO of office interior design firm Knotel, whose clients include Uber and Netflix – according to National Geographic. Most companies are just beginning to think about the changes that will need to be made to their corporate workspaces, which will include what experts outlined was open floor plans with better consideration for social distancing and personal space, as well as stricter cleaning schedules and air filtration inside these office spaces.

When it comes to the successful outlined steps on how to safely reopen your office building after COVID-19, not only will sanitation and office design be important, but having your employees thoroughly educated on transmission risks of COVID-19 and how to prevent the spreading of pathogens in an indoor office setting. Below will be a step-by-step guide on the proper steps every business should go through before opening their doors once again to employees, allowing for a safe and methodically structured indoor environment to reduce transmission risks of COVID-19.

  1. Educate Employees About Transmission Threats: Educating employees about the different risks and threats of transmission among employees will be a vital component to maintaining a safe, healthy environment with fewer exposure risks. These practices that employees should follow in the workplace includes social distancing, frequent washing of the hands and avoid touching your face during the day. The CDC suggests that employers provide education and training materials in an easy to understand format and in appropriate language for all employees to comprehend.

  2. Strategic Office Redesign & Spacing: Traditionally, many office layouts consisted of close-together, adjoining cubicles that placed employees relatively close to one another to allow for collaboration between workers. However, these open floor plans with interactive designs may soon be a thing of the past. Most companies are starting to think about how they might change their corporate workspace layout, as experts have expanded further on how open flood plans could be redone with better consideration for personal space and stricter cleaning schedules.

  3. Properly Cleaning and Disinfecting: Disinfection and routine cleanings within a workplace are necessary standards that these indoor spaces will need to undergo daily as businesses begin to return to work. Some workplaces contain shared workstations or close cubical-style layouts that allow for a hotbed of disease transmission to form which will require proper disinfection practices on these desks and areas where high traffic is constantly at in the workplace – such as breakrooms, shared desks, bathrooms, etc. The CDC suggests to perform routine environmental cleaning by disinfecting all frequently touched surfaces, such as workstations, countertops, handrails, and doorknobs.

  4. Increase Air Filtration Throughout Workplace: In an effort to protect employee in the workplace from various airborne contaminants, particularly airborne pathogens, an ultraviolet light air purifier will be a needed solution to utilize. Ultraviolet light (UV light) used in air purification devices are a known method for inactivating or reducing pathogens found in the indoor air. This added capability in air purifiers will provide the ability to deactivate airborne pathogens within the air purifier, which will be beneficial in any indoor space with high levels of transmission risks, such as a heavily populated business. Many air purification devices contain these UV lights to enable the capability to deactivate these airborne pathogens within the air purification system, therefore protecting the air in the workplace where these air purification systems are integrated.

The
EnviroKlenz UV System is effective at airborne pathogen removal by placing the UV-C light before the HEPA filter which captures biological contaminants 0.3 microns and larger. The droplet size from coughing or sneezing humans is very broad, and a HEPA filter can capture the bulk of that particulate matter range. Integrating UV lamps within the air purification device allows for continual bathing of the collection site of the HEPA filter, which allows for the items collected on the surface of the HEPA filter to get a lengthened or even infinite residence time. In the EnviroKlenz Mobile Air System with UV lights, the pathogens are exposed to the UV-C light as long as the unit and its lights remain on in the air purification system. Therefore, making this air filtration product a great option for use in any business looking to reopen amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
