Beaches in the NE Pacific are responsive to known ocean-atmospheric variability events such as the 3-7 year El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the longer term 20-30 year Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). These events affect regional climate as well as wind, wave, and water level regimes that, in turn, cause changes in beach-dune geomorphology.
