Toronto - Record Store Day (RSD) Canada has officially announced the 2014 Record Store Day Spokesband is this country’s favourite musical sons, Blue Rodeo.
Since bursting onto the Toronto club scene in the mid-80’s, Blue Rodeo has been on a remarkable career path that has led to over 4 million records sold, multiple JUNO Awards, world-wide tours, an induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and a Star on the Walk of Fame. Earlier this week, RSD also announced that hip-hop artist, social activist, political commentator, and talk radio host Chuck D as the Ambassador for Record Store Day 2014 south of the border.
“When my kids began to develop their own unique tastes in music I took them to their first independent record store. It was like a whole new world had opened to them. The fact of the matter is those record stores are so much more than just merchandise sellers. They are a social service. Like-minded people sharing their love and knowledge of music. My children have never lost their connection to independent record stores and their knowledge of music is now broad and unique," comments Jim Cuddy.
“Growing up, records were our religion. They were our statements of cool. We carried them from party to party, rec room to rec room, symbols of our hipness. It’s funny, things haven’t changed that much. Go buy some records. Take a trip!” Greg Keelor said.
2013 proved to be a stellar year for Record Store Day, which saw its biggest event to date on Black Friday, reporting an average 30 percent sales increase. Last year also saw the launch of the Adapter Prize, an innovative awards program putting the ballots right in the hands of record store experts. Modeled loosely after the UK's Mercury Prize and Canada's Polaris Prize, the Adapter Prize is awarded in four categories and determined by record store staff and record store customers.
Record Store Day takes place annually on the third Saturday of April, and falls on April 19, 2014 this year. More information will be released as it becomes available including details on artist in-store appearances and performances at participating indie record stores the world over. A full list of international RSD titles will be released on March 20, 2014.
