Richard Gere has signed on to appear in 'The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2', the sequel to a successful movie featuring more mature actors, the producers have announced.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a 2012 British comedy-drama film, directed by John Madden. The movie featured an ensemble cast consisting of Judi Dench, Celia Imrie, Bill Nighy, Ronald Pickup, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson and Penelope Wilton, as a group of British pensioners moving to a retirement hotel in India.
It has now been announced that the movie will have a sequel and that Richard Gere has signed up to appear. That a sequel is coming is perhaps unsurprising given the movie's success. By the end of its UK run, the film had grossed around US$31 million; whereas in the U.S. the film took over $100 million. This was all from a budget of around $10 million (according to Box Office Mojo).
The news that Richard Gere has been cast comes via Deadline. The 64-year-old will appear opposite Dame Judi Dench, Bill Nighy and Dev Patel, who will reprise their roles in the sequel.
According to the BBC, the sequel will see Dev Patel's character Sonny and hotel co-manager Muriel (played by Dame Maggie Smith) continue with their business as Sonny juggles his plans for expansion and an impending marriage. With the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful thriving, it only has a single remaining vacancy, which poses a problem for new arrivals Guy - played by Gere - and Lavinia - played by Episodes star Tamsin Greig.
