article imageReview: SNL's 'The Three Wise Guys' on target for this Christmas

By W. Mark Dendy     Dec 16, 2013 in Entertainment
Saturday Night Live has always been cutting edge funny. From the popular NBC show's hosts to its regular cast members, the show is on target; it makes people laugh.
This past Saturday night John Goodman hosted SNL for the 13th time.
The best skit of the show was "The Three Wise Guys," a parody of the timeless traditional Christmas story of the Three Wise Men who traveled from the Far East to see the Christ child.
The scene appears on the NBC YouTube channel and has already garnered 143,000 plus views since its posting yesterday. In 30 minutes time, while writing this review, the video had more than 7,000 views. In the midst of the holiday season, it is a surefire hit.
In “The Three Wise Guys” skit, Sylvester Stallone, John Goodman, and Robert De Niro appear on camels for a journey from Long Island and New Jersey to see the newborn king.
The juxtaposition of The Wise Guys lines with the Biblical story of the wise men is clever and hilarious at times.
Lines like Stallone's, “I heard his father's in construction,” and De Niro's “I heard the kid might not even be his.” are funny, but the skit borders on sacrilegious, although I do not believe that was the writers' intent.
While Goodman and Stalone aptly give the appearance of “riding” their camels, De Niro sits on his “one hump camel” (a source of some humor) motionless, adding to the hilarity.
Towards the end of the segment Goodman says, “When we get to Bethlehem. Where are we gonna stay?” De Niro gets a big laugh with his reply, “I dunno. We're gonna stay at this inn in town. I booked up the whole place.”
If you know the true story, you will get it. And if you don't, check out Luke 2:7.
The “Three Wise Guys,” Stallone, Goodman, and De Niro, all star in the upcoming movie “Grudge Match.”
