Ray Davies, leader of the British band The Kinks, is one of five songwriters to be inducted into the U.S. Songwriters Hall of Fame later this year.
The four other songwriters to join the coveted club are Scottish singer Donovan, Jim Weatherly (who wrote the classic "Midnight Train To Georgia," covered by Gladys Knight and the Pips), Mark James (who wrote perennial favorite "Suspicious Minds," most famously covered by Elvis Presley), and Graham Gouldman of the band 10cc. Other nominees included Madonna, Nile Rodgers, Sade and Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.
Hall of Fame chairman Jimmy Webb told the L.A. Times that: "Each of our 2014 inductees has been responsible for captivating the world with their creativity for decades, serving up a rich variety of songs for our global soundtrack."
The Songwriters Hall of Fame is an arm of the American National Academy of Popular Music. It was founded in 1969 by songwriter Johnny Mercer and music publishers Abe Olman and Howie Richmond.
According to the BBC, it is Ray Davies who is, arguably, the stand out songwriter to join the Hall of Fame. Davies wrote a number of hit songs, including "You Really Got Me" and "Lola."
The Kinks were an English rock band formed in Muswell Hill, North London, by brothers Ray and Dave Davies in 1964. The band hit the fame button with their third single, "You Really Got Me", released in 1964. The song was number 1 in the U.K., number 4 in Canada, and number 7 in the U.S. Here are The Kinks performing the track during the 1960s:
In terms of their international appeal, The Kinks had five Top 10 singles on the U.S. Billboard chart. Nine of their albums charted in the Top 40. In the U.K., the group had seventeen Top 20 singles and five Top 10 albums.
The five new inductees into the Hall of Fame will be honored at a ceremony on June 12, in New York at the Marriott Marquis Hotel.
