article imageOp-Ed: Phil Robertson rants, lies, brandishes bigotry — but why care?

By Marcus Hondro     Dec 24, 2013 in Entertainment
It really is much ado about nothing, this Phil Robertson stuff. He's a small-hearted, unseemly fellow, that's true. But is there a reason to care? All it's really served to do is get a group of whiners - to whine.
The Tea Party, Fox News, Sarah Palin, Ted Cruz, Ted Nugent, Michelle Bachman crowd will eschew reality and take their opportunity to whine. They're so hard done by. They've taken away his rights! You can't support your religion in America!! He was just talking about God and sin!!!
It's all nonsense, their reaction, like a large portion of what Mitt Romney spewed during the last election. They disconnect from reality because they're desperate to stop what the world is doing, and always has done - change. It's more accelerated now and they're panicking all the more.
A&E: Exercises rights to say no to Phil
Change isn't all good but it is wonderfully good when a TV station no longer wants a bigot to work for them. And we can forget what Phil said to GQ, almost tame by comparison to some of his words from a video made in 2010 while he spoke to a church group.
"They (gays and lesbians) committed indecent acts with one another. And they received in themselves due penalty for their perversion. They're full of murder, envy, strife, hatred. They are insolent, arrogant God haters. They are heartless. They are faithless. They are senseless. They are ruthless. They invent ways of doing evil."
What kind of church is that? Not one that honors God. That's textbook bigotry. Ted Nugent couldn't do any worse. Michelle Bachman, who once said that "Carbon dioxide is portrayed as harmful. But there isn't even one study that can be produced that shows that carbon dioxide is a harmful gas" could not be more blithely unaware of reality with any more conviction than Robertson in that video.
Gays and lesbians are heartless? Ruthless? They "invent ways of doing evil"? Ellen Degeneres invents ways of doing evil? She's one of the more compassionate celebrities on the planet. U.S. Congressman Barney Frank is evil? Edward Albee, playwright, has won 3 Pulitzer Prizes. He's "senseless"?
Every walk of life, bishops, scientists, artists, doctors, lawyers, teachers, politicians, writers, entrepreneurs, actors, athletes, each has a percentage of compassionate gay and lesbian people working in that field. How can Phil believe such blatantly wrong statements? And to be clear - if he wants to say his God doesn't accept homosexuality, that's one thing, but the hateful ranting that is so obviously wrong, that's something else entirely.
A&E: The Right to Say "No, Phil"
The right created this near-obsession with this story by whining so abjectly about the A&E decision to suspend Robertson. But there is no First Amendment that says working on a TV show is a right. But here's this: an element of the right, the Tea Partiers et all, their narrow-minded viewpoint is no longer in ascendancy so they're mad. They want us to believe it's about religion when it's about intolerance.
They'll lie to try to make it about religion.
Here's an example taken from Phil himself: after the hoopla about his GQ interview, he released this statement: “I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me," he said. "We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.”
That is obviously a lie. Phil, you're on tape saying gays and lesbians are "full of murder, envy, strife, hatred. They are insolent, arrogant God haters. They are heartless. They are faithless. They are senseless. They are ruthless. They invent ways of doing evil." That's being respectful to someone different than you?
Much Ado About Nothing
Whew! It's tiring having to point out the obvious. And it's all for naught, because it truly is much ado about nothing. The Phil Robertsons will forever be there to some degree, but they've lost. They've lost the battle to take away a woman's right to choose, they have not been able to prevent equality of the sexes or races, or prevent the overdue awarding of equal rights to the gay and lesbian community (i.e. marriage).
It's getting them desperate but let Phil and his coterie, let 'em harangue on. We hope some will become more open, more tolerant, kind. it's possible. I suspect the Republican Party has a majority of whom don't support the Tea Party element, who are compassionate and tolerant. Maybe it'll catch on amongst others.
Phil and a few million small-hearts are banded together though. But there's not enough of them. They're dinosaurs but if they want to stay out in the cold of fear and bigotry, that's okay. They aren't relevant anymore. Religion is relevant, yes, but bigotry and Phil are not.
Bye, Phil.
