Singer-songwritier Zach Heckendorf chatted with Digital Journal about his new studio album "Artifacts," and opening for One Republic.
On the song selection process for Artifacts, he said, "I selected these songs based on honesty and the need to say something specific for times in my life. Artifacts consists of songs that are based off of and represent important moments that have happened, the songs are parts of who I am or who I was when I wrote them."
He listed “The Harvest” as his personal favorite song on the album. "It's a song about self-love. Every time I sing it I’m reminded to love myself," he said.
When asked what inspires his songwriting, he responded, "As an artist, I’m inspired by different environments. I love being surrounded by nature but I also love being in different parts of a city – they both offer so much for me creatively. Essentially, as long as my head is clear, there’s inspiration everywhere."
Throughout his career, he has opened for many artists including One Republic. "One Republic was cool but also surreal because Ryan Tedder said on stage that he thinks I’m the next big thing out of Colorado. That was incredibly flattering coming from a mega hit songwriter and artist like Ryan," he said. "I opened for Michael Franti & Spearhead at Red Rocks, which as a Denver native is the Mecca of all places to get the chance to perform. It was a career highlight for sure and Michael and his band treated us all very well and showed me that being kind to people definitely pays off."
On his future plans, he said, "My plan is to hone my craft as an artist and get better everyday as an artist and a human being. I love making music and I want to continue building my music career. I know that’s a standard answer but it really is the truth – I am fortunate to get to do this and I hope to do so for a long time to come but I know that you have to work hard and I plan to!"
For his fans, he concluded, "Artifacts is my most honest and raw record as far as from a songwriting standpoint. I feel like I’m getting to a place where my recordings are more effective and I definitely hope the fans can feel it."
