The Youngbloods’ Jesse Colin Young talks New York show, new music (Includes interview)

On October 4, Young will be performing at the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore on Long Island. “I was born and raised on Long Island in Garden City,” he said. “Then, I got with The Youngbloods and I had to move to San Francisco, California.”

He continued, “I have this young band. I have seven band members that are all Berklee College of Music graduates. They are young geniuses and they are playing my music wonderfully. I start my shows solo for the first 25 minutes.”

Young shared that he has a new album in the works, where he has been working with BMG. This musical effort is slated for release in early 2019. “Our new album will come out during the 50th anniversary of ‘Get Together’,” he said.

He also revealed that his new single will be out on October 12. “It’s a political song. There are a lot of political songs on this album,” he foreshadowed. “We will also be releasing another single before the election called ‘Sisters’, which was a song I wrote because my wife asked me to,” he said.

Young described The Youngbloods’ signature tune “Get Together” as a “beauty.” “It’s a beauty. Isn’t it. We always do it to end the show,” he said. “People sing it and that’s my favorite part of the show: when I stop, and the audience continues. Boy, we were in Central Park in New York a month and a half ago, and people were singing it.”

For aspiring musicians, he encouraged them to “hang in there.” “Don’t let people tell you what to do. Don’t take crap from anyone,” he said. “Be careful. Listen to your heart and to your mind. That’s the fastest way to arrive at something really fresh.”

Digital transformation of the music industry

On the impact of technology on the music business, Young said, “I love it. My son showed me Spotify two or three years ago. He told me that I need Spotify. He showed me how to find old blues artists, and it was incredible. For me, technology is wonderful. Luckily, I don’t have to make a living solely at music anymore, although ever since I made my first record, I haven’t done anything else. Spotify is the way that it is for everybody else.”

Young continued, “I lived in Hawaii for 12 years, and I walked into this tiny guitar store, and that’s where I found out about Spotify. Young musicians will find a way to make a living.”

He shared that his forthcoming studio album will be out on vinyl. “I am hoping that we will put out a vinyl single too. Some people dig it. I was a record collector before,” he said.
