On September 29, The Script will be playing Radio City Music Hall in New York. “You can expect a brand new show. We’ve re-energized our music. I think Radio City Music Hall has a special vibe to it. It’s going to be really nice and really intimate. It’s a show I’m really looking forward to,” O’Donoghue said. “We haven’t toured in two years, so we are really pumped to put on some great shows for our fans. We’ve been away for such a long time, so it’s going to be a really intimate show.”
Regarding their new single “Rain,” he said, “It’s just a fun song that came along. The song’s about heartbreak and it’s about a break-up. We delivered in a good way. We coined the phrase sexual sadness. We’re really into it, and we love the vibe of it. ‘Rain’ is getting such a great response.”
The Script will be touring the U.K. and America. “The album, Freedom Child, comes out on September 1, and next year, we will do more shows and festivals,” he said.
Each day, O’Donoghue is motivated by his desire to be one of the better songwriters in the world. “I love being in a band, I love what I do, and as long as you do something you love, that makes getting up in the morning easier,” he said.
On the digital transformation of the contemporary music scene, he said, “Technology has changed how people are listening to music. Before, they were probably grouping songs together themselves and just making different play-lists. I never really realized that there are a lot of casual music fans out there, that don’t mind listening to play-lists or like-minded songs. I never would have predicted that instead of going to their favorite acts, they go to their favorite play-lists. That’s really interesting with where we are today with technology.”
When asked how he uses technology on a daily basis, The Script front-man said, “Right now, I’m walking around with my phone, meanwhile checking everything that’s going on Instagram and Twitter. I’m pretty glued to it. It’s very fast-paced and I try to keep up with everything.”
O’Donoghue listed Adele and Sia as his dream female duet choices. For aspiring singer-songwriters, he said, “Spend enough time trying to be unique. Be yourself and be unique. If your voice doesn’t sound like anybody else, that’s a great thing. It means that you are able to stick out from a crowd,” he said.
He defined the word success as “Being happy in life.” “Success is having a good balance of family and work. As long as you are doing what you love to do, that’s success,” he said.
For their fans, he concluded about “Rain,” “Enjoy it. We are really having fun embracing the new sound and the new vibe.”
