New York - Electronic music duo Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano chatted with Digital Journal about performing at Electric Zoo this year, as well as their plans for the future.
They also spoke about the digital transformation of the contemporary electronic dance music (EDM) scene, thanks to the help of technology.
On performing at the main stage at Electric Zoo: The 6th Boro this year, they exclaimed "It was amazing. The energy of the crowd was exciting and that made us enjoy it even more. We love playing shows in New York, it feels a little like coming home, because of the crowd! It was an honor to play at the main stage alongside all the other artists!"
Speaking of Electric Zoo, they joined Armin van Buuren on stage during his "A State of Trance" set. "It was really cool to work on that track with him. Musically, Armin’s music and our music is so different, so to bring our sounds together worked surprisingly well! We already had the best time playing at the same residency in Ibiza, where we hosted the club. Performing ‘You Are’ with him at such a cool stage was really exciting. The energy from the crowd is always such a good feeling and to play the song together, which we are so proud of, made it epic. We hope to play more songs with him, he is the nicest guy," they said," praising Armin van Buuren.
Regarding their future plans, they revealed, "There’s a lot of things coming, especially now with our own label SONO music we get to release more music which is exciting! And of course, ADE is around the corner, so we get to play in our home city, so we’re really looking forward to that! We are playing our 'Sexy By Nature' show in AFAS Live, with amazing guest artists like Sam Feldt, Benny Rodrigues, Roger Sanchez and more. There's also going to be a surprise guest, so we’re very excited! And we are curious to see what ideas come to our minds music-wise. Stay tuned."
Digital transformation of electronic dance music
On the impact of technology in the electronic music scene, they said, "It slowly started to give people more tools to create music, and more easily. You can be on a plane, grab a laptop and finish a song you have been working on. That is amazing and we don’t think it would go like this, no. For most of our songs we use it, technology, it’s everywhere around us as well. We use the tools to create our tracks and of course, social media, to get our music to the people."
On the key to longevity in the music industry, they said, "In the music industry, it can be difficult to stand out with your music, but we feel like if you just create music with a passion, other people will feel that vibe and can identify with that. Speaking to people with your music, being fresh, is what we feel is the key. You always have to keep improving yourself too, as long as we keep our own sound which makes us unique, you know."
When asked about the hardest part of their jobs as traveling musicians, they said, "We’re both family-oriented, so sometimes it can be hard to be away from our families. We try and see them as much as we can. It can be tough, we would say that is the hardest part of being musicians. Seeing them after a while is always a happy moment! But being on the road and playing shows is amazing and we love it!"
For their fans, they concluded, "Thank you for supporting us and coming to our shows. Thanks for your amazing vibe, we give our best shows because of that and we like to see you all enjoying our sets. You really give us the energy to keep creating."
