Stone Temple Pilots talk ‘Revolution 3’ co-headlining tour (Includes interview)

Most impressive about the “Revolution 3” Tour is that all of the bands (Bush, Stone Temple Pilots and The Cult) will be performing headlining sets, and every night, each act will take turns “revolving” in the top billing, which makes room for three full sets from these acclaimed rockers.

Growing up, Gutt acknowledged that he was a big Stone Temple Pilots fan, so to sing lead vocals is quite the thrill for the Michigan native. “The year that their album Core came out, I was 16 years old. That’s when I put down my guitar, and just concentrated more on the singing,” he said.

On July 27, 2018, they will be performing at the Northwell Health Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York. “We will be playing the classic Stone Temple Pilots songs, and we will play songs from the new record, all from a band that has been doing it for over 30 years,” Gutt said. “It is going to be a great time with The Cult and Bush. We are all playing headlining sets in the Revolution 3 Tour.”

Regarding his plans for the future, Gutt said, “Right now, I am excited for the next leg of the tour. We will be gone for a while.”

His songwriting is inspired by “feelings and emotions” in the music that is presented to him. “If you stick with the truth and the feelings, you never have to tell a lie. Then, it’s all good,” he said.

Digital transformation of music business

On the impact of technology on the music business, Gutt said, “Technology is a great platform for people to put their music out there. There is a lot more opportunity now. It just opens up a lot of possibilities for a lot of musicians, and it gives them more chances.”

He shared that with technology, especially iTunes, he is able to learn new songs to play quicker. Gutt also uses Voice Memos on his phone to record new song ideas.

For aspiring rock bands, Gutt said, “You need to be dedicated, and you need to really believe in your music. You have to do it for all the right reasons, instead of all the wrong reasons. It’s about the bigger picture. Luckily, I’ve gotten older and I have a son now.”

Speaking of his son, one of the most moving moments was when he performed Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” on the X Factor USA. This marked the first time that his son, Talon, heard him perform. The audience reaction was tremendous, and his audition video went viral. “That was a good one,” he said, referring to the moment his son ran to the stage, when he got four “yeses” from all four X Factor judges: L.A. Reid, Britney Spears, Demi Lovato and Simon Cowell.

On balancing fatherhood and a music career, Gutt said, “It’s hard to be away, but thank God for technology, since it allows me to face-time my son. I talk to my son as much as I can. We just make it work.”

Gutt listed multi-Grammy winner Norah Jones as his dream female duet choice. “I love Norah Jones’ voice. It just melts me,” he said.

He revealed that his pre-show ritual is meditation. “I don’t do vocal warm-ups, but I try to find a quiet place to have a moment for myself to clear my head,” he said.

Gutt defined the word success as “survival.” “Survival seems like success to me,” he explained.

Their latest studio offering, Stone Temple Pilots, which was released on March 16, 2018, is available on iTunes.
