San Holo talks Electric Zoo, ‘brighter days’ and Billie Eilish (Includes interview)

Regarding his track “brighter days,” he said, “I met Adio (Bipolar Sunshine) at Coachella for the first time earlier this year and we started talking. This was pretty early on in the album writing process so I was still writing a lot of new material. I invited Adio to come out to the Airbnb and we wrote most of the song in just two days.”

On his future plans, Holo said, “Right now, just a lot of working on my live show and waiting for the album to come out later this month. I just announced my biggest headline tour to date in North America so I am really excited. I am bringing a lot of artists from my label bitbird, most of whom have never toured the US before, so I am happy they’ll be able to show what they can do.”

On August 31, Holo performed at “Electric Zoo: The Big 10” in New York. “Electric Zoo was massive. It’s one of the festivals you hear so much about but I had never actually played, so it was great to get it off the list. It was one of the first times I got to play out ‘brighter days’ live since it came out on the same day so that was just great timing overall. The reception from the crowd was beautiful, and that’s honestly all that you can ask for,” he said.

Digital transformation of the music business

On the impact of technology on the music business, Holo said, “Technology has changed everything. With things like Soundcloud and Spotify, virtually everyone has access to music. No matter what genre or style of music you like. Also, those streaming platforms are the perfect way for artists to get their music heard easy. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Soundcloud, to be honest.”

Holo continued, “Recording equipment is getting cheaper by the day. Making it way more accessible for producers and songwriters to record their ideas and get them out there. I feel social media has been a major influence on how artists promote their music and how listeners consume it.”

Regarding his use of technology in his daily routine as an electronic musician, Holo stated that he uses it a lot. “I make and record all my songs on my laptop, of course. I use a lot of virtual instruments and make my own drum samples. I have also been incorporating a lot more guitar back into my music. The guitar itself is not ‘revolutionary,’ but I tend to process the guitar sound in a modern way. To give the ‘standard’ sound of the guitar a new spin and make it my own,” he explained.

Holo listed Billie Eilish as his dream female duet choice. “I really dig her voice and her writing. She is quite young but you would never be able to tell because of how mature she sounds,” he said.

For his fans, he concluded about his new track, “Thank you to everybody who has already streamed or bought it. I hope you guys have enjoyed it. We are working hard on a music video and I can’t wait to share that with you guys later.”
