World champion swimmer and teen vlogger Michael Andrew opened up about how he stays motivated in his latest YouTube video.
Andrew revealed that aside from swimming, growing up he played soccer and basketball. "I was super active, but swimming was where my heart was at, so I ultimately stuck with it," he said.
When asked about how he stays motivated, he said, "When I got in a place where I was feeling down and pretty dark around swimming, what really helped me was speaking with mentors and family. What I learned was to not be defined by my sport, and go back to the beginning and find out why I did it in the first place. I realized that I love the sport for the joy that it brings me when I go fast. In a dark place like that, you have to go back and understand why do you swim and what's the purpose behind it. If you know why you do something, the how comes naturally. I also set up goals and I put them all over the house."
He continued, "Set attainable goals and come up with a game plan. Know your strategy and be involved in your sport. That's what separates professional athletes from recreational athletes. They are deliberate with what they do. That helps keep me motivated."
As a YouTube vlogger, Andrew has interviewed such esteemed swimmers as Jacob Pebley, Ryan Murphy, Nathan Adrian, Allison Schmitt, Michael Chadwick and Cody Miller, among others.
