Review: Rodney Atkins delights at Mulcahy’s Pub and Concert Hall (Includes first-hand account)

Atkins opened his set with “Farmer’s Daughter,” as he accompanied himself on acoustic guitar, as purple lights dimmed from the stage. “Help me ya’ll,” he said, midway through the song, and he incorporated it as a crowd sing-along.

“This is a dream ya’ll,” he said, and immediately broke into “About the South,” which was fiddle-driven and traditional-sounding. After switching guitars (from acoustic to electric) and throwing guitar picks in the crowd, he continued with the spitfire “He’s Mine” and his chart-topper “Take A Back Road.”

“Tell a Country Boy” was met with a raucous response and the fans were left chanting “U.S.A., U.S.A.” Atkins went on to thank the men and women that are abroad that are fighting for our country, as well as their families. “This is the land of the free because of the brave,” he underscored, and went on to sing his patriotic-flared “It’s America,” and he introduced the members of his five-piece band.

Green lights graced the stage during the upbeat and fun “Friends With Tractors,” which was followed by instrumental solos from his band-mates. He brought his wife, country songstress Rose Falcon, on stage and they sang a brand new song that they wrote entitled “Riddle.” Falcon showcased her honey-rich voice, which blended well with Atkins’ velvet baritone, and they had great chemistry together.

Falcon treated the crowd to her version of “Friday Night,” which she co-wrote with her friend, country singer Eric Paslay, which became a number one hit on the Country Mediabase charts. Her live version featured some killer mandolin playing. “Ya’ll are awesome,” Falcon told the Mulcahy’s crowd, and blew them a kiss.

“Rose Falcon,” Atkins said, praising his wife, and he returned on stage to sing the rowdy “Cleaning This Gun (Come on in Boy),” and he had the audience singing along and clapping on “These Are My People.”

“Thank you, man. You guys are unbelievable,” he said, and returned for an encore that included “Watching You,” which he began solo and acoustic, and the rest of his band joined in. He sang an additional verse of the “Watching You” chorus a cappella as a sing-along. Equally impressive was his first number one and platinum-selling single “If You’re Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Even Knows).”

The Verdict

Overall, Rodney Atkins put on a well-received country show at Mulcahy’s Pub and Concert Hall in New York. The inclusion of his wife, Rose Falcon, in his set was an added treat. His concert earned 4.5 out of 5 stars.
