Similar to this performance at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater on Long Island, Thomas was able to deliver yet again. His set included the sultry “Something to Be,” which featured killer electric guitar instrumentation, and “Her Diamonds” was sheer bliss, especially since he gave it all.
“Thank you,” he said. “Tonight is all about something old, something new and something borrowed,” he added, and immediately broke into “Disease.”
Thomas paid homage to the late but great Prince by singing “Baby, I’m a Star,” which was a neat interpretation. He accompanied himself on acoustic guitar on his popular hit “3AM.” He thanked all the guys of Counting Crows for this summer tour, especially since they are “having a really, really good time.”
He showcases his wide range on the heartfelt ballad “Someday,” and the inclusion of “Bent” in his show was an added treat. It was great to hear him sing his Grammy-winning “Smooth,” sans Carlos Santana, and he concluded his set with the high-energy tune “This Is How a Heart Breaks,” which earned a raucous response from the Coney Island audience.
The Verdict
Overall, Rob Thomas is one of those artists that can do no wrong in the live setting. The enthusiasm he puts into his live shows is contagious. He sings with a great deal of emotion. His energetic performance at the Coney Island Amphitheater garnered an A rating.
