Review: Paul Rodgers revisits musical roots on new live ‘Free Spirit’ CD (Includes first-hand account)

The album opens with the mid-tempo and sassy “Little Bit of Love,” which is catchy, and instantly lures the listener in this polished collection of songs. It immediately breaks into the bluesy “Ride on Pony,” as well as the sultry “Woman.”

His vocals on “Be My Friend” are pure soul, and he picks up the pace with the infectious “My Brother Jake.” “Love You So” is a well-crafted ballad, which showcases his rich voice, which is smooth as silk.

Other stand-out songs in this 16-track collection include “Travellin’ in Style,” the harking “Magic Ship,” and the spitfire “Fire & Water,” where the listener can recall the early musical work of “The Boss” Bruce Springsteen, and that ought to be taken as a compliment. Rodgers shows his ability to out with his band on “The Hunter,” and he incorporated the Free signature tune “All Right Now,” as a crowd singalong, and it works out quite well.

Rodgers captivates on his live rendition of “Wishing Well,” and the album closes with the harmonica-driven “Walk in My Shadow,” and “Catch a Train.”

Free Spirit is available on iTunes.
