The song is a collaboration with Bastille, and its music video was directed by Mercedes Bryce Morgan. The video captures the essence of a young woman, portrayed by actress Miranda Cosgrove, and her golden retriever, Mello, which she received as a birthday present when she was a young girl.
Marshmello acknowledged that the first time he heard the song, he was blown away by it. “The amount of emotion that you could feel in the lyrics was crazy,” he explained. As he listened to the lyrics, he recalled many things that he has been through in his life, such as toxic relationships and other complex situations. He also shared in a press statement that he recently lost his dog, which was difficult for him.
His goal was for the song’s music video to capture the pain that one feels when losing somebody important (whether it is a human or pet), as the circle of life continues. “This is what made me happier,” the electronic musician admitted.
In addition, Marshmello is a supporter of ASPCA’s #FindYourFido campaign during “Adopt a Shelter Dog” month (October). The campaign will officially launch on October 1, and for more information on #FindYourFido, visit the ASPCA website.
On August 31, Marshmello headlined the first day of the electronic music festival, Electric Zoo, in New York, where he played the main stage.
The Verdict
Overall, this is a song and a music video that are worth more than just a passing glance. Marshmello outdoes himself on “Happier.” The viewers should have a Kleenex handy while watching the “Happier” video.
“Happier” featuring Bastille is available on iTunes and on Spotify.
