Review: James Robert Webb soars on new ‘Honky Tonk Revival’ country album (Includes first-hand account)

His album opens with the traditional-sounding “Six Strings & The Truth” and it is followed by the inspirational country-rock tune “Hard Working Women.” It is followed by “Nobody In His Right Mind,” which is reminiscent of George Strait’s early musical work. “Honky Tonk Revival” is piano-driven with neat fiddle instrumentation. He also does a moving yet haunting cover of the George Jones classic “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” which is regarded as one of the greatest songs in country music history, and rightfully so.

After breaking our hearts with “He Stopped Loving Her Today,” he shows his ability to rock on the drinking tune “Heart Hangover.” Webb changes the pace with the ballad “Slow One,” while “Call Me Anytime” is more modern and commercial-sounding. Equally fun is the upbeat “American Beauty,” which is one of the best tracks on the album. It closes with the fiddle-driven “Fallin Star” and with the upbeat yet witty “Man on a Mission.”

The Verdict

Overall, James Robert Webb delivers on his brand new album Honky Tonk Revival. He manages to stay true to his musical roots. It garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
