“Long Year” was written after his mother passed away from ovarian cancer, and the song itself deals with Lee’s experiences of his own battles with cancer, where he fought testicular cancer twice.
The music video hits the viewer like a shot in the heart. “I have something I would like to share with you guys,” he stated, in the beginning of the video, and he begins singing the piano-driven ballad. He chronicles his chemotherapy treatment sessions through video clips. “I’ve been to hell and back but I’m living life right here,” he sings.
The lyrics of “Long Year” are raw and conversational, and the listener ought to have the Kleenex ready. The music video is dedicated in memory of his mother, and it concludes with the following inspirational quote: “your set-back is a set-up for a comeback.”
“Long Year” is available on iTunes.
The Verdict
Overall, Jackie Lee’s latest single and music video for “Long Year” are his best musical works to date. As a song, it is well-written and powerful; moreover, it is so personal to him, that anybody could be moved by this song and its message (since anybody who has ever been affected by cancer, or knows a person affected by cancer can relate). Lee is not afraid to showcase his vulnerability as a recording artist, and sorrow. “Long Year” garners an A rating.
