Review: Ex-Sick Puppies rocker SHIM releases spitfire solo album (Includes first-hand account)

The CD opens with the upbeat and unapologetic “A Brand New War,” which instantly lures his listeners in this collection. It is followed by the mysterious “Secrets,” which has a Sick Puppies vibe to it, as well as the optimistic “Our Time.”

Equally noteworthy are “Hallelujah,” “Fearless” and “All of Me” from a sonical and lyrical standpoint. Each song has its own identity, and SHIM is not afraid to let all sides of his artistry shine. With SHIM, it’s what you see is what you get.

After the unflinching “Sting Like a Bitch,” it closes on a soothing note with “Broken Men,” which is melodically stunning, and “Don’t Wake Me Up,” which is a fitting choice to conclude this musical project.

His new solo record is available on iTunes.

The Verdict

Overall, there is a lot of variety on SHIM’s new studio effort. It is raw and authentic, and it is recommended for fans of Sick Puppies, SHIM, or anybody who is into hard rock. His eponymous solo album garners an A rating.
