They shared the stage with Tears for Fears, where they kicked off their set with their signature tune “Everybody Wants to Rule the World.”
As Daryl Hall and John Oates took the stage, their appearance was met with a raucous response from the Forest Hills crowd. They began their show with “Family Man,” and it was followed by their classic hit “Maneater” and “Out of Touch.”
Equally noteworthy were “Say It Isn’t So” and “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’,” but the highlight vocal of the evening was their endearing “Sara Smile,” which has been covered by many artists, but none of them do it like Daryl Hall and John Oates.
They closed with an extension version of “I Can’t Go For That,” which was simply terrific. The showed their audience that high-quality songs of this caliber will never go out of style.
For their encore, the acclaimed duo returned to perform “Rich Girl,” which was a fun sing-along, as well as “Private Eyes” and “You Make My Dreams,” where they left their New York audience yearning for more. They deserved every standing ovation they received throughout the night.
The Verdict
Overall, Daryl Hall and John Oates were incredible at Forest Hills Stadium. They proved to be at the top of their game musically, well over four decades in their career. It is evident that their induction into the coveted Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (in 2014) was long-overdue and based on sheer talent and merit. Hall’s vocals were crystalline, powerful and sharp, and John Oates‘ soaring harmonies were second to none. They allowed their timeless music to speak for itself. Their concert garnered an A rating.
