Miller Place - On September 12, Billy Joel band member Mike DelGuidice (and front-man of the Billy Joel tribute band Big Shot) hosted a virtual concert, as part of his "On the Porch" series.
With the help of modern technology, DelGuidice made this show accessible to his fans and followers on social media. This show was comprised of original music, as well as classic cover songs.
DelGuidice kicked off his set with "Days of Old," which is from his solo albums (two different versions). He did Elton John justice by covering "Your Song." He dedicated the song "Josie" to his mother, where he accompanied himself on acoustic guitar. He even threw in Fleetwood Mac in the mix with a soothing rendition of "Landslide."
"Hello in Florida, Tom Cavalier," he said. DelGuidice began "With or Without You" in a slow fashion, and it built up into a true powerhouse tune. He belted out the high notes towards the end of the U2 classic with such ease, where the listener could recall Jared Leto and Thirty Seconds to Mars ("City of Angels"), and that ought to be taken as a compliment.
"Thank you," he said, graciously. He even sang a line of "Mickey" by Toni Basil a cappella to please a fan request, who was interacting with him via Facebebook.
His love ballad "Mona Lisa" resonated well with his listeners, and rightfully so. He continued with Billy Joel's "She's Got a Way."
DelGuidice selected Billy Joel's "River of Dreams" as his personal favorite Billy Joel tune, and praised his writing for being fantastic.
He picked up the tempo with yet another original tune, "Ordinary Guy," which was featured on the CBS sitcom Kevin Can Wait, starring comedian Kevin James. "You should blame me for the show getting canceled," he said, jokingly, about the sitcom.
DelGuidice sang the song "Souvenir" off his Miller Place album and his cover of "Leader of the Band" by Dan Fogelberg, which ought to be enjoyed for its rawness and simplicity.
"Until the End" was another fitting original tune to include in his virtual show, especially towards the end. He also covered
The Outfield's "Your Love," where he took his listening audience back to the '80s. He threw in a little "Roxanne" in there by The Police, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, and gave his fans a snippet of it since his "throat was getting a little tired."
He closed his two-hour virtual show with his version of Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way," and with a sultry, piano-driven rendition of "Oh! Darling," thus tipping his hat to The Beatles. "God bless you guys," he concluded. "See you soon. See you next time."
The Verdict
Overall, Mike DelGuidice was exceptional as always. He gave his fans and listeners two hours of non-stop entertainment, as part of his "On the Porch" series, which featured his own, original music and covers of some of the greatest songs of our time. His live set garnered an A rating.
On September 22, Mike DelGuidice will be performing with Big Shot at Mulcahy's Pub and Concert Hall, in his Nassau County home.
