Review: Bill Anderson honored at Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York (Includes interview and first-hand account)

Anderson (who is affectionately known as “Whisperin’ Bill”) is already a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, and a long standing member of the Grand Ole Opry.

On being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Anderson said, “It is very special night, and I am looking tremendously forward to the moment.” “I wrote a lot of songs,” he admitted.

Regarding his plans for the future, Anderson said, “To keep doing what I am doing.” For his fans, Anderson said, “Howdy and thank you.” “If it wasn’t for the fans, there wouldn’t be any possible way that I would be here,” he said, effusively.

Fellow country singer-songwriter Steve Wariner serenaded the audience at the ceremony with his rumbling version of “The Tips Of My Fingers,” which is a song that Anderson originally penned in 1960. “It feels wonderful to be here, especially to represent and honor my good friend, Bill Anderson. We have been friends for so long, and I have cut a bunch of his tunes, and I am so lucky to have written songs with him,” said Wariner. “To get to do one of his songs tonight, ‘The Tips Of My Fingers’ is really great. I was lucky to have a hit with it back in 1991. I will be singing that, and then I will be doing the induction ceremony for Bill. I am really, really honored.”

Wariner subsequently inducted Bill Anderson into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and in return, he delivered a moving and humorous speech prior to singing his chart-topping single “Still,” which stayed at No. 1 for seven weeks in 1963.
