Review: Alessia Cara brings sultry vocals to Radio City Music Hall in NY (Includes first-hand account)

Fellow musicians Ruth B and Nathan Sykes opened for Cara, and they both did an excellent job.

“New York, what’s up?” Cara asked, as she took the stage. She began her set with “I’m Yours,” which was upbeat and fun. “Thank you,” she said, prior to thanking everybody for being here, and acknowledging the fact that performing at Radio City is a dream come true for the Canadian songstress.

She continued with “Four Pink Walls,” where she got the fans clapping along with her. Cara got the crowd on their feet for her smash hit “Wild Things,” which featured a killer drum solo by Cara in the beginning, as a red backdrop graced the stage.

Cara accompanied herself on acoustic guitar on the sultry “Overdose,” which featured a neat televised background with ocean waves. For the lovey dovey portion of the show, she had the fans hug their loved ones and friends on “Outlaws,” which featured catchy “ooh ooh ooh ooh” hooks.

“Stars” included an impressive background of stars, and the fans aided Cara by lighting up the venue with their cell phones, which was a beautiful sight, and she nailed the vocal with her crisp voice.

During “Stone,” singer-songwriter Sebastian Kole came out on stage and he delivered a solid duet with Cara, who noted that the song is about this “crazy world,” and going home to the person that keeps you grounded.

She played her electric guitar on Frank Ocean’s “Swim Good,” and she did the song justice. She went on to praise the crowd for being “amazing,” and she had them singing along with her on her cover of “Wild.”

Cara shared that “Seventeen” is a song about growing up and life going way too fast, and she underscored the importance of listening to advice of the elders. “River of Tears” was an impressive piano-driven ballad, while “Scars to Your Beautiful” was a true anthem of female empowerment, which she dedicated to her girls in the house.

“All right New York. Thank you guys for being here,” she said, prior to closing with her signature song “Here,” which was the tune responsible for changing her life over the past year. She returned for an encore performance of “My Song,” which was fun and liberating, as she shared a personal video of her journey over the past year with her fans via the giant televised screen.

The Verdict

Overall, Alessia Cara gave Radio City Music Hall her all. She sang from her heart with a great deal of passion. She commanded the stage well, and she had the audience with her every step of the way, as they soaked everything in. She serves as a great role model for young girls to look up to. With a powerhouse performance of this caliber, Cara is destined to become the next big female superstar in music.
