article imageMegan Davies discusses new 'Bad Poetry' EP, John Mayer Special

Rising singer-songwriter Megan Davies chatted with Digital Journal about her new "Bad Poetry" EP, which she released independently.
On the song selection for Bad Poetry, she said, "I spent a good part of the past two years writing dozens of songs and touring with them. I tried to take mental notes of the ones people seemed to connect with and also the ones that felt authentic to me."
She noted that she wasn't going for a certain theme for the EP. "Looking back, I can see a few overarching themes: feeling lost, getting older, and finding momentum."
Regarding her lead single "Black and White," she said, "I had the guitar part idea and had written the first verse – about growing older and still sometimes feeling like a stranger to myself. I ended up finishing it with another singer-songwriter, Jason Walker. He loved the idea and we ran with it."
On her inspiration for music and songwriting, she said, "I spend a lot of time exploring on the guitar and sometimes the piano. I love coming up with little melodies and playing around with the emotions they can evoke. It's intangible but I love fleshing those ideas out and finding a story within them."
This fall, Davies will be going on tour with the band Boyce Avenue, and her touring schedule is available on her Facebook page.
Digital transformation of music
On the impact of technology on the music industry, Davies said, "I don't think anyone predicted how game-changing social media would be for musicians. When I was growing up, I always imagined that being a musician started with getting a record deal. But today, an independent artist can find their own audience through the Internet."
Davies uses technology in her daily routine as a singer-songwriter. "I do a ton of recording, and video production and editing. I find when I'm home, I spend most of my day on the computer. But I've always loved when creative meets technical work. I've become a bit of a gear nerd in the past few years," she said.
She listed John Mayer as her dream male duet choice. "It would be cool to record a duet with John Mayer. His guitar playing is incredible," she said.
For her fans, she concluded, "Thanks for following my journey, and I hope you enjoy my evolution and where the EP ended up! Also, check out the acoustic versions on YouTube and Spotify – because that’s where everything started!"
Her Bad Poetry EP is available on iTunes.
