Rising artist King Leg chatted with Digital Journal about his upcoming album, "Meet King Leg," which will be released on October 20 on Sire Records/Warner Bros.
On the song selection process for his debut album, King Leg said, "Basically, I've been writing for over 10 years now, and I have tons of songs I had been working on. After Dwight [Yoakam] expressed interest in recording me, I showed him all my songs, and he went through them and he picked the ones he wanted to record with me."
He worked on his new album with veteran country star Dwight Yoakam. "It was a great learning experience. I learned a lot about production, arrangement and creating sounds in the studio. It was a really good fit for me, having him on board, since we share similar taste in music," he said.
Digital transformation of music business
"Beyond the sounds that are being made, I think a lot of the sounds that people think are current, a lot of them are derived from sounds from the 70's and 80's. People can record their music themselves in their homes, which are putting the bigger recording studios out of business. It made the creative pool larger for artists, and it levels the playing field," he said, about the impact of technology in the music scene.
"I use technology in my writing process," he admitted. "I don't use the sounds as much, but I started recording on a tape, and the iPhone memo. I use the memo demo a lot, and I would put it on my computer, and demo the songs on there, and create parts, and really finish the songs that way. I kept watching YouTube videos on how to use the software and how to set up the equipment to record sounds," he elaborated, on his use of technology.
King Leg listed the late country songstresses Kitty Wells and Lynn Anderson as his dream female duet choices in music. "One thing I liked about Lynn Anderson is that I was a big fan of Morrissey. I went to one of his shows, and he performed 'Rose Garden' at his show, and it really touched me," he said.
For his fans, he concluded, "I hope they enjoy the album. I feel there is something for everyone on there. There is more to come."
