2017 iHeartRadio "Rising Star" winner James Maslow chatted with Digital Journal about his tenure with Big Time Rush, the key to longevity in the industry, as well as his favorite hobbies and dream collaborations.
When asked to reflect on his days with Big Time Rush, he said, "I first auditioned at 17 years old. I was the second youngest, after Kendall Schmidt."
On the key to longevity in the entertainment industry, Maslow said, "It's rebranding. Suddenly, things go gradually. That's a real good way to put it. I chose to do BTR on my own, and now, I'm back to the gradual start. That's how it's been for the past two to three years. Creating the content, filming the movies and writing the music. Now, it's starting to come out and it's starting to work. It is exciting to feel that. All that momentum is starting to pay off. I'm excited."
Maslow noted that it would be a good idea to get his How I Like It album on vinyl. "That would be cool! Kendall Schmidt got his done, I might do a limited edition as well," he said. "I'm actually re-doing all my merchandise, and I'm starting a new company in the clothing world, so I'm excited about that."
In his spare time, Maslow revealed that he loves to surf. "I really try to surf, though I haven't been in the water for six months," he said.
James Maslow listed Jordin Sparks and Kehlani as his dream female duet choices. "It would be awesome to do something with Jordin," he said. "Kehlani has an amazing voice."
Also, Maslow shared that he would like to work with Jeff Timmons from 98 Degrees, since they both have many things in common, coming from pop vocal groups and both being health and fitness enthusiasts. "Very cool. That would be awesome," Maslow said.
He defined success as "Freedom to do the films that I want to do, when I want to do them, and play the shows where I want to play and when I want to play them." "Most artists don't have that freedom. Most actors have to take whatever role comes their way since they need to pay the bills, and most musicians take whatever tour makes the most sense to them," he said.
For Maslow, social media is the "best way" for him to stay in touch with his fans, since it affords him the opportunity to chat with them directly.
His How I Like It album is available on iTunes.
"There is going to be a lot of new things coming out in 2018," he told his fans. "I'm excited!"
