This marks the first time in his music career, which spans nearly five decades, where he has recorded the blues CD that he has been hinting at for years. This new album features 11 songs that have strong tries to his Louisiana roots, right up through the pulse of Memphis on Beale Street. “It’s a Louisiana blues type of album, and it has a Louisiana flavor all over it,” he said. “It has been something I wanted to do, even before I had a record deal. I finished this project back in 2008, and I got to put it out eight years later.”
In this collection, Kershaw covers Chuck Berry’s “No Money Down,” the Allman Brothers’ “It’s Not My Cross To Bear” and Solomon Burke’s “Where’d The Money Go.” This classic blues project was produced by Kershaw himself, and it consists of seven original tracks that were either written and co-written by Kershaw, which include “I’m Going Crazy,” “No Money Blues,” and “I’m Your Huckleberry,” among others. “When we started running out of cover songs, we started writing a few. I ending up writing or co-writing seven songs on the album, and I am not a songwriter. I depend on songwriters to write stories that I’ve lived before, but I got lucky enough to write seven songs,” he said.
He listed “Hot Night in Kaplan” as his personal favorite tune on the album. “It’s one of those swampy feeling things, and it was my favorite to work on,” he said.
His plans for the future are to continue touring this year, and he hopes one day to come to the New York area. “I sure hope to come back up there. I love it there in New York,” he said.
Kershaw is a Grammy-nominated country artist whose resume includes six gold and five platinum albums. His hit songs include such classics as “Cadillac Style,” “Queen Of My Double Wide Trailer,” “She Don’t Know She’s Beautiful,” “I Can’t Reach Her Anymore,” “National Working Woman’s Holiday” and “Love Of My Life.”
