Mayfield has had several No. 1 hits on iTunes, he has performed with some of the biggest bands in the industry and has had very successful placements on Grey’s Anatomy, The Fosters, Nashville, and Pretty Little Liars, among others.
“History” is a slower song that he reached deep in his soul to write, and it already has a massive interest for placements. “The guitar riff was really the inception of the whole song. I was going through a lot, and I just couldn’t get away from it. This song gave itself to me, and when it was done, I felt like it was complete. The song is perfect, and it said everything I needed to sya,” he said.
He is finishing up his new studio album Recoil, which will be released in the fall. “That record was written for a specific thing. Unlike a lot of my records, this album was written for a specific cause, which was the fire coming through. Starting in November, I would pick up a guitar, and I couldn’t write a song to save my life. Now, I have over 100 songs in my catalog, and I felt like the situation stole my prized possession, which is songwriting. I love the craft of songwriting,” he said.
For Mayfield, Recoil was a therapeutic and cathartic album, and he hopes that it will allow him to connect with his listeners. “I hope the people will really tap into the lyrics,” he said. “I am excited for people to tell me what their favorite songs are and why.”
While it is difficult for Mayfield to select a favorite song from the new album, he shared that he is drawn to “Turncoat,” the love song “Merry Go Round” and his single “History.” “The song ‘Turncoat’ is more aggressive, and I really like ‘Merry Go Round’ for its melody and simplicity,” he said. “They are all very different. These are my three favorite songs right now.”
The Alabama native listed Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift as his dream collaboration choices. “Bruce Springsteen is one of the most prolific songwriters of all time, and I would like to write a song with him. Taylor Swift has a very interesting and smart personality, and I would love to see her writing process,” he said.
