article imageInterview: Cosmic Gate discusses new studio album 'Materia' Special

By Markos Papadatos     Mar 20, 2017 in Music
New York - German electronic duo Cosmic Gate chatted with me about their show at Marquee New York, as well as their new album "Materia."
On March 10, they headlined Marquee New York, which was yet another great experience for Cosmic Gate. "The room was packed, another sold-out show on the tour. It was an awesome energy on the floor and sideways by the tables as well! We enjoyed the show a lot, It's always good to be in New York City and we are already looking forward to coming back."
Regarding their track, "Fall Into You," they said, "Every track happens differently somehow. With 'Fall Into You' we wrote the piano theme from the breakdown section first, very rough and demo style, and after a short while already after sending it out, Jes came back with this vocal. We were like 'wow, this is fantastic,' and we kept working on more music, layering, arranging, simply finishing the track and working on it. We brought it to the point and to the version that you know now. She just added so much feeling and heart to an already touching melody line, biggest props to her and her unique vocal and songwriting talent. It was an honor to have her on board every single time."
On the song selection process for their new album, Materia, they said, "Basically with everything what we do, even more when it comes to writing music, we just trust in our guts, and so we did with the music and the writing process on Materia.
After a while we had plenty of what we felt are great demos and ideas (which is why Chapter 2 of Materia is going to come soon) and we knew we could not finish all on time. That's why we actually felt its not a bad idea to release the music in two parts, simply to give our fans more time to enjoy every single song, and hopefully learn to know it deeper and more intense.
After 'Start to Feel,' we had the feeling 17 songs out there on one album released on one day, that a lot of potential from the album gets lost simply with the fast movement of the times and a lot of people just skipping through music and maybe pick two or three for a play-list. Materia Chapter two will continue sound-wise in the footsteps of Chapter 1 soon, we have more exciting collaborations and own songs in the making. We can’t wait to share it hopefully before the summer."
When asked about their personal favorite song on the album, they acknowledged that they like them all. "We have a personal relationship and story with every single song. That's why they are on the album in the end, but as much as a mother won't put one of their kids over others," they said.
They listed Emma Hewitt and Kristina Antuna as their dream female collaboration choices in music.
On their future plans, they said, "We are currently working on Chapter 2 of the Materia Album story, the Materia tour is in full force and moving over from the U.S. to Europe and Asia pretty soon, and will come back for a part 2 to the U.S. later in the year after the busy European Ibiza and Summer festival season. On top, we have our weekly radio show 'Wake Your Mind,' so we are beyond busy basically seven days a week, hopefully we see you guys on one of our shows or on WYM radio and podcast, we spread the word on a final release date of Materia Chapter 2 soon."
Regarding the key to longevity in the electronic music industry, they said, "Every artist may have his own view here, we personally think most important for longevity in the music scene is to be unique, is to have a own handwriting, a musical signature sound, something you basically stand for as producers and even so as a DJ. Copying others, it sure might work for a certain time, but we prefer to be copied than to copy others, being the trend is better than to run behind it."
